As a product leader, I spent a career driving growth and creating billions in enterprise value. But for too long, I watched investors reap most of the rewards.
So ten years ago, I changed how I play. By embracing strategic opportunities like M&A and corporate development, I proved I was ready to lead, became CEO, and became an investor myself.
At the time, I assumed the transition would be natural for other product managers. We’re analytical and we love solving complex problems. So wouldn’t we all want to become investors?
I quickly learned that assumption was wrong. Most product managers aren’t driven by capital allocation, they’re driven by the craft of building. And that’s a good thing.
But something interesting is happening now. More product leaders are realizing that they deserve a real share of the upside they create. They’re not looking to become full-time investors, but they’re expanding their influence.
If that resonates with you, and you're starting to think about how to participate in this side of the ecosystem, there’s one thing you should not do: jump straight into angel investing. It feels accessible, but it’s often the fastest way to lose money without learning what truly drives returns.
There is a better way in. If you’re serious about learning what that looks like, reply or DM me. I'm happy to share how product thinking can translate into investment alpha when approached with intention.
